New business dean nameD Dr. Linda M. Salchenberger, associate dean of academics in Northwestern Universitys School of Continuing Studies, has been named the Keyes Dean of Marquettes College of Business Administration and the Graduate School of Management. She is the first female dean of the college and the inaugural Keyes Dean, which has been endowed by retired Johnson Controls CEO James Keyes, Bus Ad 62. Salchenberger will succeed Dr. Dennis Garrett, assistant professor of marketing, who has served as interim dean for the College of Business Administration since January, following the appointment of Dave Shrock as interim provost. Keyes donated $7.2 million in December 2007 to endow the deanship in the College of Business Administration.

School of Education becomes a College Marquettes School of Education officially became a College of Education July 1, with the authority to grant baccalaureate degrees, specifically a bachelor of science in education in either elementary/middle education (grades 1-8) or middle/secondary education (grades 6-12).

Going green Five Marquette engineering students recently had 30 weeks to build and test a biodiesel reactor for their senior project. Their struggles and triumphs were featured in a five-part series in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Lang honored for work with Command Info Center Kathy Lang, chief information officer, is one of 10 information technology executives who recently received the 2008 Midmarket IT Leadership Award at the CIO Decisions Conference. Lang was honored for her role in building a virtual patrolling center in the universitys Department of Public Safety. The Command Information Center links nearly 200 blue light phones and more than 300 cameras to provide surveillance footage of on- and off-campus areas.

In assessing the nomination, the judges said Lang showed real vision and direction, possessed strong leadership skills and, as a result, was able to effectively articulate project expectations and mission.

South African Scholar to be Named Peacemaker in Residence Next fall, South African scholar Chris Ahrends will serve as the Center for Peacemakings Peacemaker in Residence. Ahrends currently lives in Cape Town and is a collaborator with Marquettes South Africa Service Learning Program, for which he teaches a course titled Theology of Forgiveness, Reconciliation and Justice. In 1983, Ahrends was ordained an Anglican priest and worked as a fulltime priest for 18 years, including as Chaplain to Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Sub Dean of St Georges Cathedral in Cape Town. In 2005, he was appointed Executive Director of the Desmond Tutu Peace Trust. Ahrends time at Marquette will be spent in various activities, including a retreat and meetings with faculty members and students.

Doc leads team to championship Former Marquette University mens basketball player and Marquette Trustee Glenn Doc Rivers led the Boston Celtics to the franchises 17th NBA Championship. In his fourth season with the Celtics, Rivers guided the team to its first title in 22 seasons. Boston sealed the series victory with an impressive 131-92 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers at the TD Banknorth Garden. Rivers played three seasons with MU before leaving for the NBA. He earned his bachelors degree in pre-law/political science in 1985. Rivers is the sixth former Marquette player to claim a NBA Championship. Dean Meminger (New York Knicks, 1972-73), Maurice Lucas (Portland, 1976-77), Jim Chones (Los Angeles Lakers, 1979-80), Butch Lee (Los Angeles Lakers, 1979-80) and Dwyane Wade (Miami, 2005-06) all accomplished the feat as players.

Wade on the way to China Former Marquette University mens basketball player Dwyane Wade has been named to the 12-member USA Basketball Mens Senior National Team and will represent the United States in the 2008 Olympic Summer Games in Beijing, China, this August. Wades tenure with USA Basketball dates back to 2004, when he was also a member of the USA Senior National Team at the Olympic games in Athens, Greece. He was a tri-captain of the 2006 USA World Championship Team and helped the squad to the bronze medal in Japan.

Golf all-american Student Mike Van Sickle has been named All-American honorable mention by Golfweek magazine. In addition to winning three tournaments during his junior season, Van Sickle set MU records for scoring average and rounds of par or better. He recently finished fourth at the 47th annual Northeast Amateur Invitational at Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford, R.I.

Marquettes Women of Influence honored Dr. Kristina Ropella, chair and professor of biomedical engineering, and five alumnae were recently honored as 2008 Women of Influence by The Business Journal. Ropella was selected for more than two decades of teaching undergraduate and graduate engineering students and helping the College of Engineering develop a Women as Engineers summer academy and outreach to K-12 schools. She was recognized earlier this year as Wisconsin's Professor of the Year. In addition to Ropella, also honored were:

  • Professor Curtis Carter recently participated in the Greater Milwaukee Committee delegation that visited Beijing to explore cultural and educational exchanges and trade between Wisconsin and China.
  • The Center for College Affordability & Productivity recently ranked Marquette 69th. The center evaluates colleges on results, including professor reviews, graduate rates, student grant awards and graduates vocational success.
  • Vietnamese Ambassador Le Cong Phung recently visited Marquette. He was in Milwaukee to speak at an event titled Building Bridges to Vietnam.
  • Marquette University professor Eva M. Soeka, Arts 74 and Law 77, started the first alternative dispute resolution course in 1987. She was responsible for the creation of a program for a graduate-level certificate in dispute resolution in 1993. Since its inception, the program has been filled to capacity, and more than 150 people have earned the certificate.

  • Jim Boylan, Arts 79, a former Marquette University basketball player, will serve as an assistant coach for the Milwaukee Bucks basketball team next season.
  • Manpower CEO and Marquette Trustee Jeff Joerres, Bus Ad 83, recently won the Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate Citizenship. The Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, D.C., encourages scholarship and discussion of world policy issues.
  • Andrew D. Brunhart, Eng 74, was recently named the deputy director of the U.S. Mint.
  • Nicholas DAgosto, Comm 02, tries to score chicks in two comedies due out next year. Nick plays a romantic lead in Fired Up!, a film about two guys who sign up for cheerleader camp in an attempt to pick up girls. This film is due out in March. The other movie, Mardi Gras, tells the story of three guys who take an impromptu trip to Mardi Gras to you guessed it! pick up girls. This film is due out next July.
  • William M. Rudolphsen, Bus Ad 77, was recently named the new senior vice president and chief risk officer of Walgreens.
  • Dr. Judith Fitzgerald Miller, interim dean of the College of Nursing, will serve as the new dean of the Sinclair School of Nursing at the University of Missouri.
